Cultured Grenadian Girl (CGG)
Welcome to Cultured Grenadian Girl!
There are several layers to our identity that can be most prominent at any given time. One of my favourite layers of my identity is being Grenadian, Caribbean.
What does it mean to be Grenadian?
Well a bit obviously, being from the island of Grenada, one of the most southern islands of the Caribbean archipelago. Pure Grenada, The Spice of the Caribbean, most known for the exportation of spices like nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, bay leaf and clove. Let’s not brush over that branding move made there by declaring ourselves the spice of the Caribbean lol.
As most Caribbean islands, Grenada is little bit talawa. With a population of over 110,000 people living in the island, and several in the diaspora, there is something about Grenadians that stands out, we just have that umph, flavour, that je ne sais quoi. Grenada is home for me; the land of my birth and my first exposure to culture. No matter where I am or go, part of my heart remains in Grenada. The sounds, the sights and the taste might be transportable but the feelings cannot.
What a time to be alive, amidst the cultural renaissance of the world. Much like the 14th century renaissance of Europe, post colonial countries are having their own.
My hope for this is for us to share our own stories, break our silence, reclaim our voices and continue the revolution. After all this post colonial experience did not come without revolt. May we be reminded that our resilience stands on the foundation of our forbearers, and may we be all of their best dreams come through.
While nationality might be one of my favourite layers, human is a greater one. I’m an advocate – for marginalized persons – young people, abandoned people, Caribbean people. I see the Caribbean as a young region, left to navigate the “developed world”. Hence I am an economic advocate most often which comes from nationality and all the subheading that comes under.
There’s so much life to explore, unpack, discover!
